Apple’s leadership transition takes effect on September 1: John Ternus, previously its hardware engineering chief, succeeds Tim Cook as chief executive. Cook becomes executive chairman, with responsibilities including engagement with policymakers. The company announced the succession on April 20—not today.
Ternus joined Apple’s product-design team in 2001 and its executive team in 2021. He also joins the board as Arthur Levinson moves to lead independent director. The distinction worth remembering: Cook is changing roles, not leaving Apple.
Hurricane Karina, August 30. MODIS Land Rapid Response Team, NASA GSFC.
NASA’s September 1 MODIS image feature shows Hurricane Karina over the Pacific, photographed by the Aqua satellite on August 30. NASA describes it as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds at the time of the image.
The image is an observation of a particular moment, not a live storm warning. Satellite views show a storm’s structure; current local alerts and forecasts are what matter for immediate plans.
US launches new strikes on Iran as tensions rise around Hormuz
The United States carried out fresh strikes on Iranian targets in and around the Strait of Hormuz, DW reported with Reuters, AFP and dpa. US Central Command said the attacks responded to attempted Iranian attacks on shipping and American personnel. Iran threatened retaliation. Those explanations are claims by the respective authorities; the latest exchange adds uncertainty around a strategically important shipping route.
Google Research’s MAPL-EMIT automates the detection and measurement of methane plumes in hyperspectral observations from NASA’s EMIT instrument. The researchers are releasing the model, synthetic training data, inference code and a plume database.
For an applied-ML developer, the interesting part is the complete pipeline: finding a plume, separating its signal from the background, estimating its emissions and locating a likely source. This is a research system built around a specific measurement problem, not a general chatbot.
California’s legislature has passed AB 1795, the Smoke Damage Recovery Act, according to the state Department of Insurance. The measure would establish standards for testing and restoring smoke-damaged homes and new requirements for handling insurance claims. It has been sent to the governor: legislative passage is not the same as a signed law. The bill also calls for reports on the Lineage Logistics warehouse fire in Boyle Heights.
Apple reminds Mac developers to prepare for life after Rosetta
Apple says macOS 27 will be the final macOS release supporting Rosetta, the translation layer used by Intel-based apps on Apple silicon. Its September 1 developer notice urges developers to move applications to native Apple-silicon support. Limited functionality will remain for certain older, unmaintained games that depend on Intel frameworks. Check the architectures of your app and its dependencies before assuming a successful launch means it is native.
Google’s new forecasting model handles multiple related time series and additional contextual variables in a single forward pass. TimesFM 3 has 330 million parameters and was pretrained on more than a trillion time points, according to its researchers. Zero-shot forecasting means it can predict without task-specific fine-tuning; it does not mean every prediction is reliable. Testing against a simple baseline still matters.
Immigration partnerships expand, local radio reports
Little Rock Public Radio’s September 1 newscast reports a sharp rise in Arkansas law-enforcement agencies partnering with federal immigration officials. Its morning bulletin also covers scrutiny of a State Police arrest near Blytheville and economists’ assessment of additional cattle imports. The linked three-minute bulletin is a quick way to follow the regional reporting behind these developments.
An XR agent that can point to what it is talking about

AgentHands combines conversational AI with hand gestures grounded in a shared spatial scene. Google Research’s prototype uses information about objects and gaze to coordinate speech with pointing and other gestures. It is a research demonstration, not a shipping headset feature. For immersive prototyping, it raises a practical question: when an agent says “that one,” can the user tell exactly which object it means?
Venice puts 68 immersive projects in the spotlight
Venice Immersive opens to festival audiences on September 2, following September 1 previews for eligible industry and press pass holders. The official selection includes 68 projects from 26 countries: 30 in competition, 35 in Best of Immersive and three from Biennale College Cinema–Immersive. Its scope stretches beyond headsets to virtual worlds, mixed reality and installations—a useful survey of where creative XR is heading.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi used a September 1 video message to promote domestic consumption and self-reliance while celebrating reported economic growth of 7.8%. He urged people to avoid unnecessary gold purchases and overseas leisure travel, The New Indian Express reported. These were political appeals—not newly announced legal restrictions on buying gold or travelling abroad.
Los Angeles County announced $1.27 million to expand manufacturing and automation training at Rio Hondo College. The funding supports 48 participants across two cohorts, including residents previously waitlisted, according to the county announcement reported by MyNewsLA. The programme targets aerospace, defence and advanced manufacturing careers; it is a training investment, not a list of open software jobs.

AP JAC Amaravati served notices to district collectors on August 31 over employees’, teachers’ and pensioners’ pending grievances. Leaders announced black-badge protests through September 5 and a work-to-rule campaign from September 15, The New Indian Express reported. This is an announced programme of agitation; it should not be mistaken for a confirmed statewide shutdown.
Actor and activist Prakash Raj was among nearly 100 people detained during a march towards the chief electoral officer’s office, The Times of India reported. Protesters challenged the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and sought more time for claims and appeals. Their allegations about the revision remain attributed to the protesters, not established findings of this paper.
Kalamkari hanging, ca. 1640–50. The Met, object 20.79. Public domain; detail.
This Deccan cotton hanging, dated around 1640–50 by The Met, carries figures inside architectural spaces. Its surface was made through mordant painting, dyeing and resist techniques. The museum suggests it was probably a backdrop for royal ceremonies—not a garment worn by a queen.
That distinction is part of reading fashion history carefully: textiles could dress a person, furnish a room or frame a ceremony. Here, the cloth itself helped create the setting. Its surviving patterns offer a close look at the skill involved in telling a story through colour and cotton.

US recorded-music revenue rose 6.9% to $6 billion in the first half of 2026, Reuters reported using RIAA figures. CD revenue jumped 58.6%, while vinyl grew 17.7%. Streaming still supplied the largest share at $4.9 billion. Physical formats are growing quickly from a smaller base; the figures do not mean CDs have overtaken streaming.

From September 14–20, the Moon helps point the way towards Antares and the Teapot. These are planning dates; clouds, your horizon and local sunset determine what you can actually see.
