OpenAI prepares Astra with tighter cyber safeguards

OpenAI says its forthcoming Astra model meets the “Critical” cybersecurity threshold in the company’s preparedness framework. It reports stronger vulnerability-finding and exploit-development capabilities, alongside additional misuse protections and monitoring for unauthorised actions.

Astra was not generally released in this announcement. OpenAI says advanced cybersecurity access will start with a limited testing group, followed by its Daybreak Blue programme. The capabilities and safety conclusions are the developer’s assessments; the launch system card is still to come.

Fable 5.1 arrives; Mythos access stays restricted

Anthropic introduced Claude Fable 5.1 for general availability and Claude Mythos 5.1 through trusted-access programmes. The company says they share an underlying model but use different safeguards, with Mythos supporting specialised cybersecurity and life-science work.

Lower cache-read prices could make typical token-billed workloads about 25% cheaper than Fable 5, Anthropic estimates; actual savings depend on usage. Its new enterprise safeguards, designed to keep data in customer-controlled cloud infrastructure, are planned for phased availability later this fall—not available everywhere today.

Roman sets off to survey the dark universe

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched on a Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center on August 30. The agency says the observatory has begun a roughly three-month journey to its final orbit, about a million miles away.

Roman combines wide-field infrared imaging with sharp resolution to study dark energy, dark matter and planets beyond the Solar System. Launch is the beginning of deployment and preparation—not the start of a finished sky survey. This photograph catches the rocket silhouetted against the Sun.

Huang urges G20 to focus AI rules on real-world harms

Nvidia chief Jensen Huang urged G20 delegates in Chapel Hill to regulate actual problems associated with AI rather than hypothetical harms, Reuters reports. He appeared alongside US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick; executives from OpenAI and Anthropic were also scheduled to participate. This is a position in an active regulatory debate, not an agreement by the G20 or evidence that longer-term risks have been resolved.

John Ternus has succeeded Tim Cook as Apple’s chief executive, under the transition announced in April. Cook moves to executive chairman rather than leaving Apple. Ternus previously led hardware engineering; the handover makes product leadership and the new chairman’s policy-facing role worth watching. Remember the two dates: the succession was announced April 20 and took effect September 1.

US and Iran exchange fire as regional tensions widen

The United States and Iran exchanged attacks after weeks of relative restraint, Reuters reports. US Central Command said its strikes targeted Iranian air defences, maritime capabilities and communications. Iran said it attacked US assets in Jordan and Iraq; Jordan and Bahrain reported intercepting incoming weapons.

Claims about casualties remain disputed. Reuters reported that US officials’ initial assessments contradicted Iranian claims of American deaths. The renewed fighting places the Strait of Hormuz and the security of surrounding countries back at the centre of the crisis.

Google Research’s MAPL-EMIT uses deep learning to identify and quantify methane plumes in observations from NASA’s EMIT instrument. The release includes a model, synthetic training data, inference code and a plume database. It illustrates a practical AI pipeline: detect a signal, separate background effects, estimate emissions and investigate a source. Its purpose is specialised measurement, not general conversation.

NASA picks Blue Origin for a Mars relay network

NASA awarded Blue Origin a contract with a maximum potential value of about $700 million for a Mars telecommunications network. A high-performance orbiter is due to be delivered by December 31, 2028; NASA expects the network to operate at Mars by 2030. The spacecraft is intended to relay science data, imagery and navigation information. These are contract milestones and planned capabilities, not an operating service.

Developer news Sept. 1

The Rosetta deadline belongs on Mac developers’ road maps

Apple’s developer notice says macOS 27 will be the last release with general Rosetta support. The translation layer allows Intel applications to run on Apple silicon; a working application is therefore not necessarily a native one. Developers should check plug-ins and third-party libraries as well as their own code. Apple describes a narrower exception for some older, unmaintained games.

The island programme opens September 2 after previews for eligible industry and press visitors. La Biennale lists 68 immersive projects from 26 countries: 30 in competition, 35 in Best of Immersive and three from Biennale College Cinema–Immersive. Beyond headset films, the selection spans mixed reality, installations and virtual worlds. The useful creative question is how each work choreographs the audience’s attention, movement and participation—not just which device it uses.

Solar power goes unused even as electricity demand climbs

India curtailed nearly 11 terawatt-hours of solar generation over 15 months, AP reports, citing government figures and Ember research. Limited transmission, storage and grid flexibility prevent some available electricity from reaching users when needed. Adding panels alone does not solve an evening demand peak: moving power, storing it and coordinating generation are also essential.

Naidu asks officials to accelerate temple programme

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed TTD and the Endowments Department to speed construction of 5,000 temples and finalise locations, PTI’s Bhasha service reports. The direction concerns a government-backed programme; it does not mean 5,000 temples have already been built. The distinction between announced targets and completed public works matters when following state politics.

Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda criticised officials over road works and poorly maintained parks during a review of Bengaluru’s five city corporations, NDTV Profit reports. The complaints included uncleared garbage despite maintenance allocations and questions about closely spaced streetlight poles. These are concerns raised at a review meeting, not a completed independent audit or confirmation that repairs have been carried out.

Textile history వస్త్ర కథలు

A Kashmir shawl is more than a printed pattern

Mid-nineteenth-century Kashmir shawl in wool and silk, The Met collection
Shawl, mid-19th century, attributed to Kashmir. The Met, 23.126.1; gift of H. de B. Parsons, 1923. Public domain.

The Met describes this wool-and-silk shawl as double-interlocking twill tapestry, embroidered and pieced. Those words reveal several kinds of labour in one textile: weaving the structure, adding stitched detail and joining sections. Its pattern is not simply a print applied to a plain surface.

The museum dates it to the mid-nineteenth century and attributes it to Kashmir. Look closely at how the ornament changes scale across the cloth. The record does not identify a royal wearer; craftsmanship can be appreciated without inventing one.

US recorded-music revenue reached $6 billion in the first half of 2026, up 6.9%, Reuters reports from RIAA figures. CD revenue rose 58.6% and vinyl 17.7%, compared with 4.7% for streaming. Yet streaming supplied $4.9 billion of the total. Fast percentage growth from a small base should not be confused with market leadership.

A shared night for looking at the Moon

September 19 is International Observe the Moon Night, NASA’s new monthly guide notes. You can participate from home or join a local gathering; Griffith’s star party is listed below. On September 18, Venus reaches its brightest point for this evening appearance, low in the west after sunset. A clear horizon matters.

The equinox follows September 22 and the Harvest Moon September 26. NASA places Saturn near that full Moon; Neptune is much fainter and needs optical assistance. These dates are a sky diary, not a promise of clear LA weather tonight.
