Weather AI moves from six-hour steps to hourly forecasts
Google has introduced WeatherNext 3, combining live satellite observations with hourly forecasts. Temperature and moisture predictions use a five-kilometre grid, compared with the previous model’s 25-kilometre grid and six-hour steps. Other variables use different resolutions; not every output is five-kilometre detail.
The company says the model is beginning to power weather experiences across products including Search, Gemini and Maps. For developers, the interesting change is the input pipeline: fresh observations, not only historical simulation outputs. A finer grid does not guarantee that a forecast for a particular street will be right.
The new development after the earlier safety preview is an actual rollout: OpenAI has announced GPT-6 Astra for a limited set of organisations, with wider paid ChatGPT and API access planned over the coming days. Do not assume it is already enabled on every account.
OpenAI describes improvements in coding, computer use and multistep professional work. Those are the developer’s claims, not a universal verdict on reliability. For a prototype, the practical test remains whether it completes your own workflow correctly—and respects the boundaries you set.

Immersive-learning company Optima says it has completed the migration of its educational content library to Arthur and announced a partnership for its next generation of VR lessons. Optima retains its intellectual property while gaining control over customisation and the AI models, knowledge sources and behaviours used inside lessons.
For creative technologists, choosing a spatial platform also means choosing how content, permissions and AI behaviour are managed. The announcement describes infrastructure and plans; it does not establish that AI-guided lessons improve learning outcomes.
U.S. adds 162,000 jobs; unemployment holds at 4.1%
The first August employment estimate, released this morning, shows U.S. nonfarm payrolls rising by 162,000 and unemployment unchanged at 4.1%. Food services and local government education added jobs, while the information industry lost employment.
June and July were revised upward by a combined 55,000 jobs. Average private-sector hourly earnings rose 0.3% during August and 3.1% over the year. These are survey estimates subject to revision, not a count of every new vacancy.

Charles Leclerc led the opening practice session at Monza with a 1:23.008 lap on medium tyres. Lewis Hamilton finished 0.173 seconds behind, completing a Ferrari one-two, with George Russell third and Liam Lawson fourth.
This is the first on-track result of the weekend, rather than another qualifying preview. Different tyre choices and running programmes make practice an imperfect guide to race pace. Colton Herta’s Cadillac stopped with a suspected hydraulic issue, interrupting the session.

India’s and Japan’s men’s teams will meet in the Suzuki Cup on September 22 at Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, the two boards announced today. The fixture launches celebrations of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
It is part of the Sport 75 initiative to encourage sporting exchanges between the countries. The announcement confirms the match and venue, not an Indian playing XI; avoid assuming that a particular star will take the field.
Suno has pulled an advertisement featuring Mary J. Blige. In a statement reported by Variety, the AI-music company said it had made a deal with someone who presented themselves as her official representative, then ended the campaign after learning otherwise and that she was uncomfortable.
The fresh development is the campaign’s withdrawal—not the older video’s appearance. Blige’s representative offered Variety no further comment. Suno’s explanation should be attributed to the company, rather than treated as an independently established account of the agreement.
New vehicle restrictions take effect on city flyovers
A two-wheeler ban on Bengaluru’s airport elevated corridor took effect Friday, alongside vehicle restrictions on the BGS, Peenya and Silk Board–Ragigudda flyovers, The Indian Express reports. Police cite road safety, breakdown-related congestion and emergency access.
The rules differ by structure and vehicle class. The separately announced two-wheeler restriction on the Electronic City elevated corridor starts September 11, not today. A blanket citywide flyover ban would be an inaccurate description.
Bass and Raman set out contrasting climate records

At Thursday evening’s environmental forum at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, Mayor Karen Bass presented her record as one of environmental-justice progress. Challenger Nithya Raman argued that City Hall’s progress on environmental goals has stalled, LAist reported from the event.
Each candidate answered questions separately for about 45 minutes, moderated by LAist climate reporter Erin Stone. The replay lets voters compare their answers. These are the candidates’ competing positions, not a finding that either account has been proved.

Before this silk cloth was woven, its pattern was dyed into both sets of threads: warp and weft. The double-ikat process requires careful alignment as weaving reveals the design. Here, four elephants carry a royal procession, accompanied by soldiers, horses and camels.
The Met connects these Indian-made textiles with trade in Indonesia: valuable patola served as prestige gifts for local rulers in the Dutch pursuit of spice-trading privileges. An intricate cloth could carry diplomatic weight as well as colour.
