Claude’s 13-million-line proof meets the Lean kernel
Anthropic has released what it calls the first complete computer-checked formalisation of Fermat’s Last Theorem. Claude agents worked for 11 days, producing about 13 million lines of Lean and proving 30,300 intermediate theorems; 29,500 are used in the final proof.
The result formalises the established Wiles–Taylor proof rather than discovering a new proof. Anthropic says Lean’s kernel checked the finished work and a separate comparator matched the theorem statement to Mathlib. The larger lesson for AI builders is concrete: a model generated the artefact, but deterministic software served as the verifier.

Pierre Gasly took pole position for the Italian Grand Prix in a surprise qualifying result at Monza, with George Russell second and Oscar Piastri third, AS reported after Saturday’s session.
The result replaces yesterday’s practice picture; it is not another weekend preview. Pole settles only the front of Sunday’s grid, not race pace, strategy or reliability. The official Formula 1 results page had not yet populated its table when this edition was checked.
Missouri takes its congressional-map fight to the U.S. Supreme Court
Missouri asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday to permit a new, Republican-backed congressional map for November’s midterm election. The state’s highest court had blocked the boundaries and ordered a statewide vote on whether to keep them.
The map was drawn to improve Republicans’ chance of adding a House seat by reshaping a Democratic-held Kansas City district. More than 300,000 petition signatures were submitted for a referendum. The fresh development is the federal appeal; the justices had not ruled by this paper’s cutoff.
Naidu calls staff unions to the table after protest notices

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu called representatives of 11 recognised service associations to an 11 a.m. meeting at his Undavalli camp office on Saturday, after employee groups pressed long-pending financial demands.
The agenda includes interim relief, appointment of a Pay Revision Commission commissioner, dearness-allowance arrears, surrendered leave and other dues. AP JAC Amaravati said its lunch-hour ‘Demands Day’ protest would continue. No outcome from the meeting had been verified by the research cutoff.
A Teacher’s Day profile reports that lecturer Ambarish C. M.’s AGS Charitable Trust has helped 618 out-of-school children enter government schools. Its small team works mainly around Nayandahalli, with 35 children currently attending lessons and receiving meals at its centre.
Older learners who have never attended school may spend about a year building basic literacy before age-appropriate placement. This is a reported community profile, not a new government programme; the numbers come from the trust and have not been independently audited in the article.
Floral Decorated Textile, early 18th century. India, Coromandel Coast; cotton, mordant and resist dyed. The Met, 2012.487.1. Public domain.
This kalamkari cotton fragment is organised like a printed page. A narrow floral band divides two registers: above it, tall and short flowering plants alternate, each individually drawn; below it, a flower-and-vine unit repeats twice.
The maker used mordants and resist techniques to control where red, blue, green and ochre dyes entered the cotton. The cloth shows that repetition did not mean sameness: structure could hold many distinct plant forms together.
