Google selects 16 Asia-Pacific teams for environmental AI accelerator
Google DeepMind named 16 organisations to the inaugural Asia-Pacific cohort of its AI for Planet accelerator. The three-month programme begins with a Singapore bootcamp this week and focuses on biodiversity, climate resilience and sustainable agriculture.
Participants will work with Google researchers and models including AlphaEarth Foundations, SpeciesNet and Perch. The announcement is a cohort selection—not proof that the projects already work at scale. Useful questions for any demo are what data is local, how performance will be validated and who bears the cost of a wrong prediction.
Employee alliance pauses planned agitation after state assurances

AP JAC Amaravati temporarily deferred its planned agitation after a meeting with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. This is the material change since this paper’s September 5 report on the talks: the alliance has now paused protest plans while the government begins acting on assurances.
The employee group welcomed the appointment of a pay-revision commissioner, release of two dearness-allowance instalments, restored additional pension, surrender-leave payments and health-card measures. It still wants interim relief and a dated roadmap for clearing arrears, so the dispute is paused rather than fully settled.
Visakhapatnam forum asks for independent review of proposed AI data centres
Speakers at a Green Visakha meeting called for an independent panel and public disclosure before proposed AI data-centre projects around Visakhapatnam proceed. The report places their combined proposed capacity at roughly 6,500 MW.
The participants asked for assessment of land, electricity, water, environmental effects, employment, incentives and data security. This is a newly reported civil-society demand, not an announced government review or a finding that every proposed project will be built.
Judge raises conflict concern in fight over Sheriff use-of-force records

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge has questioned whether county lawyers can represent both sides of a dispute in which the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission seeks unredacted use-of-force records from the Sheriff’s Department. A September 17 hearing will consider whether separate counsel is required.
Outside lawyers for the county responded Friday that no conflict exists and that the county acted appropriately. The commission’s suit concerns records tied to one deputy shooting and two alleged beatings. The judge’s tentative ruling raises an ethics issue; it is not a final resolution of the records case.
EU offers Greenland a €200-million partnership as Arctic pressure grows

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen offered Greenland €200 million over two years for climate work, internet access, hydropower, fisheries and education, and signed a partnership declaration in Nuuk with Greenlandic and Danish leaders.
The commission also wants support for Greenland roughly doubled to €500 million in the EU budget beginning in 2028; that larger amount still requires budget approval. The visit coincides with an Arctic Shield exercise involving about 400 personnel from 11 NATO countries and comes amid Greenlandic and Danish concern over renewed U.S. pressure concerning the island.
North Korea commissions a second destroyer as regional drills begin
North Korean state media said Kim Jong Un commissioned the country’s second 5,000-ton destroyer and again called for a stronger nuclear deterrent. The report came as the United States, South Korea and Japan began a trilateral exercise.
State-media descriptions and outside military assessments are not interchangeable. The commissioning establishes that Pyongyang presented the warship as entering service; it does not independently verify every claimed weapons capability or readiness level.
Coastal Andhra faces humid heat before heavier-rain risk later this week
The India Meteorological Department forecast isolated hot and humid conditions over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, alongside thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds of 30–40 km/h are possible on Tuesday.
The report says heavier rain may develop over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on September 11–12. A regional forecast is not a street-level guarantee; check the current IMD district bulletin before travel or outdoor plans.
A sari whose materials record three kinds of skilled work
Sari, 18th century. Silk, cotton and metal-wrapped thread; India. The Met, 46.156.15. Public domain.
This eighteenth-century sari combines silk, cotton and metal-wrapped thread in a single cloth nearly 3.76 metres long and 1.96 metres wide. The materials tell us that lustre, structure and metallic brilliance were engineered together rather than added as a modern surface effect.
The Met’s catalogue does not assign a narrower regional workshop, so the honest lesson is in what the object itself supports: Indian weavers could coordinate fibres with different behaviours while controlling a large wearable composition. Attribution should stop where the record stops.
