BRICS leaders challenge unilateral sanctions as Middle East tensions dominate Delhi summit
Leaders of the 11-member BRICS group used their New Delhi summit statement to condemn sanctions not authorised by the United Nations and to express concern about escalating Middle East tensions. The text also referred to attacks on civilian infrastructure and safeguarded nuclear facilities—an indirect criticism of US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said BRICS was ‘not against anyone’ and proposed a seafarers network; Vladimir Putin pressed for permanent UN Security Council representation for India, Brazil and African countries. The communique shows the bloc’s shared language, but not complete alignment among its members on every conflict or policy response.
Russian strikes kill three in Ukraine as Putin warns against European troop deployment
Russian attacks killed two people in the Zaporizhzhia region and one in Kryvyi Rih, local officials said. In the Odesa region, officials reported 35 people wounded and damage to a high-rise building.
Speaking at the BRICS summit, Vladimir Putin warned that deploying European troops in Ukraine would mean war with Russia. European leaders have discussed a possible peacekeeping force as part of a future settlement; that discussion is not an announced deployment.
Antonelli leads the first Friday at Madrid’s new Madring circuit

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli set Friday’s fastest lap at the new Madring circuit, a 1:33.662 in second practice, ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The session was interrupted when Arvid Lindblad crashed at Turn 13.
Lando Norris lost representative running to a gearbox change. With every team still learning a new track, Friday’s order is evidence about early pace and adaptation—not a reliable prediction of the race result.
Order for 2,550 more veteran homes on West LA VA campus stands on appeal

The Ninth Circuit declined the Department of Veterans Affairs’ request for a full-court rehearing, leaving in place an order for 750 temporary units within 18 months and 1,800 permanent units over six years on the West Los Angeles campus. Those homes are in addition to 1,200 units covered by an earlier settlement.
A three-judge panel had upheld a finding that the VA discriminated against veterans with serious mental illness and brain injuries, while separately reinstating UCLA’s baseball lease. Plaintiffs now expect a compliance timetable; the VA had not immediately responded to the ruling.

Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated a critical-care block and Integrated Public Health Laboratories at Vijayawada’s old government hospital, according to a PTI report.
Officials briefed the leaders on the facilities. Additional health projects were scheduled for virtual inauguration later in the day; those planned ceremonies are not treated here as completed openings.
Reliance team studies seawater cooling route for proposed Vizianagaram data centre
Vizianagaram district officials and Reliance representatives assessed the Konada coast and a possible pipeline route as they study desalinated seawater for cooling a proposed data-centre project near Polipalli and Bhogapuram, The Times of India reported.
The visit is a feasibility step, not proof that the cooling system or full project has been built. For AI infrastructure, the engineering question is material: very large computing facilities must secure power and cooling without shifting excessive water demand onto nearby communities.
State review finds 58% of Andhra schools below three-star benchmark
A state education review cited by The Hans India placed 25,418 of Andhra Pradesh’s 43,626 schools below a three-star rating. The same review recorded student attendance at 85.45% and teacher attendance at 99.07%.
Officials identified 6,242 dilapidated classrooms across 3,733 schools and ordered demolition by September 30 with alternate arrangements for students. These are administrative review figures, not an independent physical audit of every campus.
Sari, India, ca. 1875. Silk and metallic thread; 731.5 × 106.7 cm. The Met, 1978.50. Public domain.
The Met records this sari as an Indian work from about 1875, made in silk with metallic thread. At 7.315 metres long and 1.067 metres wide, the full cloth shows how scale, border and field work together rather than as isolated decorative motifs.
Metallic thread catches light against silk, but the catalogue does not identify a region, workshop, wearer or precise weaving method. A responsible reading stops there: material, date and dimensions are evidence; a royal story would be invention.
