AI labs face antitrust suit over alleged agreement to slow development

A proposed class-action lawsuit filed in federal court accuses Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google of illegally coordinating calls to slow frontier-AI development. The plaintiffs argue that collective restraint would deprive paying subscribers of product improvements; the claims have not been adjudicated.

The case exposes a real governance tension: competitors may want shared safety practices, while antitrust law scrutinises coordination among rivals. Anthropic chief Dario Amodei had already acknowledged that problem and suggested a narrow government waiver for some safety conversations. The companies did not immediately respond to the Associated Press on Saturday.

Voter-engagement groups warn funding gap could weaken midterm turnout work

Several large left-leaning voter-engagement and racial-justice organisations are cutting staff or facing shortfalls as voting begins for elections that will determine control of Congress, the Associated Press reports.

A coalition seeking $27.5 million for engagement and persuasion said it still needed $5.4 million for turnout work across 10 states and 17 House districts. The report describes a funding allocation problem rather than a forecast of turnout: donor priorities, campaign strategy and late money can still change the picture.

Measles case prompts warning for Amtrak travellers through Union Station

California health officials say an unvaccinated passenger later hospitalised with measles travelled by Amtrak and connecting buses through six counties, including a stop at Los Angeles Union Station. The person crossed California between September 10 and 12; posted departure and arrival times are estimates based on schedules.

Anyone who shared the route or stations may have been exposed. Officials advise people who are not fully immunised or are unsure of their status to contact a healthcare provider; anyone with suspected symptoms should call before entering a clinic so precautions can be arranged.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to scientifically assess drought-like conditions and declare affected mandals by October 1. A preliminary Kharif review identified drought-like conditions in 513 mandals across 28 districts—268 severe and 245 moderate, according to officials.

District collectors were asked to send relief proposals by September 24, ahead of a state-level committee meeting on September 29. The numbers are a preliminary government assessment, not yet the final drought declaration.

NIA files charge sheet against nine in online-radicalisation case

The National Investigation Agency filed a charge sheet before its Special Court in Vijayawada against nine people in an online-radicalisation case. The investigation began with a March case registered by the NTR Commissionerate’s Two Town police and was later transferred to the NIA.

The agency alleges the accused supported proscribed organisations, used social platforms and built a separate communication application while planning violence. Those are prosecution allegations; a charge sheet is not a conviction and the investigation is continuing.

Road repair work has begun along parts of the Varthur–Gunjur stretch after reporting highlighted severe congestion and deteriorated infrastructure affecting schoolchildren and daily commuters. Bengaluru East City Corporation Commissioner D. S. Ramesh ordered urgent work.

Instructions include repairing potholes at Varthur Junction, fixing a culvert slab on Gunjur Road, coordinating with traffic police and exploring an alternative route. The actions are immediate mitigations; the report does not establish a completion date or a permanent capacity solution.

Asian Games open in Aichi-Nagoya as India fields 501-member contingent

Emperor Naruhito declared the 20th Asian Games open at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium after a two-hour ceremony. India’s 501-member contingent was led in the athletes’ parade by shooter Manu Bhaker and kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat.

Competition had already begun in several sports. India advanced to the women’s cricket semifinals after beating Japan and was due to face Bangladesh; Quimcy D’Souza moved to the women’s teqball bronze-medal match after a semifinal loss. Scheduled matches can still change, so the official Games programme remains the live reference.

Gujarat embroidery travelled—and changed in the journey

Early eighteenth-century cotton bedcover from Gujarat, embroidered with silk
Bedcover, Gujarat for the British market, early 18th century. Cotton embroidered with silk; 254 × 309.9 cm. The Met, 68.61. Public domain.

This quilted bedcover joins several embroidered cotton panels into a field of flowers, vines, leopards, deer, squirrels and birds. The Met identifies it as an early eighteenth-century work made in Gujarat for the British market.

Its imagery was not a one-way export. Gujarati makers adapted motifs circulating through English, Indian and Chinese textiles, while European embroidery was itself responding to Asian cloth. Trade moved designs in loops; artisans translated them into something new.
