What I wish I knew before learning XR

“Learn XR in 90 minutes.”

“Learn XR in 90 minutes.”

No, you cannot learn XR in ninety minutes. You can, however, learn enough to make the field stop feeling like a sealed room. That is a much better goal for a first workshop.

I wanted people to leave knowing how an XR scene thinks: where the user is, how input becomes interaction, why scale matters, and how to test one small idea. Once those pieces become less mysterious, the tutorials start making sense. The workshop was not a shortcut to expertise. It was a doorway, and honestly, doorways are underrated.

yeah… that’s impossible.

but maybe this 90-minute workshop tomorrow can be a start.

3 years ago today I tried Microsoft HoloLens for the first time at my previous lab, the Emerging Analytics Center at UA Little Rock

I remember opening Unity, importing MRTK, and just trying to make hand interactions work.

Half the time things broke. The other half… holograms suddenly responded and it felt like magic.

Fast forward to today and XR feels like it’s entering a new phase. Better tools, AI accelerating development, and platforms like PICO XR pushing spatial computing forward.

If you’re curious about XR, theres a free online workshop by PICO XR and XR Bootcamp tomorrow where you can see how developers start building spatial apps using open, cross-platform tools.

It’s Tomorrow (March 5th) at 13:30 CT by David Gene Oh and Ke Jing, PhD (I’m always a learner and I’m excited for this workshop tmrw !)

Maybe you won’t learn everything in 90 minutes.

But it might be the start of something interesting.!

What I remember most is the shift from an idea in my head to something another person could actually touch. Shipping makes the questions sharper, the feedback more honest, and the next version much easier to imagine.
